As paving experts, we don’t mind sharing with you a few secrets of our craft. Today, we are going to talk about the process of paving.

For most paving jobs, we recommend the complete removal and replacement of the existing surface. By starting from scratch, we can ensure that everything is done to the highest standards. We begin by fully excavating the surface and creating a new base. Once the new base is installed, we add asphalt and compact it. Typically, we create a layer of asphalt approximately two inches thick. Next, the asphalt must be left to cure and dry causing it to dry and become harder.

For residential and commercial surfaces, we typically use different types of asphalt. It all depends on the type of traffic that will travel over the surface. A standard residential mixture is composed of approximately 3/8″ rock material.

Under ideal conditions, a freshly paved surface can be used within 24-48 hours. However, this does not mean the surface is fully cured. In fact, the curing process can take up to 12 months! You would think that surfaces would cure faster in Arizona’s extreme heat, but the opposite is actually true.

A well designed, skillfully installed, high-quality paved surface can last as long as 12-15 years (give or take) if it is cared for correctly. It is important to fix small issues before they develop into major problems. If you see a pothole developing in your paved surface, schedule repairs with Sunrise Asphalt as soon as possible.
